A few months ago, blogging comrade Blowfish asked me about how well has my figure collection aged through the years.  I promised him I would look into it because I just so happen to have a pair of identical figures that remained unopened for the past 6 years or so.  I am sorry Blowfish >.<;  I kept pushing this out and out and out and now I realized that I pushed it out for 4 months!  But today, I am going to make good on my promise and do what I said I was going to do 4 months ago!  Here I present to you the pair of Pia Carrot 3 Hasegawa Akemi Floral Mint Type made by Kotobukiya back in January 2004.  The figure on the your right hand has been opened since the day it arrived at my house but it has been under the protection of my dust shield since there; on the other hand, the figure on your left has stayed in the box during this entire time, no accidental exposure to Ultraviolet light, minimum contact with air, etc.

I have always considered Ultraviolet light and oxygen the two biggest enemies to my figure collection, so I have made it a point to never expose my figure collection under direct sunlight for an extended period of time since it can cause chemical reactions to the PVC or painted surfaces of the figure.  Oxygen on the other hand, is an extreme active agent that can react with just about anything, including but not limited to paint, plastic, metal given enough time.  Obviously, I cannot eliminate oxygen since I do not have a vacuum sealed display cabinet, but I have taken steps to slow down the oxidation process by restricting airflow to my figure collection through my Dust Shield +1. I don’t know how many of you have noticed but for the past 24 hours or so, this website has virtually gone down due to the web hosting side problem.  The DNS server seemed to be in working condition but anything that had to do with the wordpress database has gone down to a crawl and would time out more often than not.  I was trying to be a good sport about it and tried to let the web hosting service to fix it by themselves.  However, the situation had not improved when I woke up in the morning so I had to put in a support ticket, they responded within 5 hours or so and it seems like the situation had improved a lot since then.  At least I haven’t gotten a time out (just yet)!

Anyway, not sure how many of you were expecting this to happen but I have finally made the jump and bought the Nikon D5000 and the 18-105mm lense from B&H online store.

I was assured that the package will be delivered this coming Thursday, so if the weather is nice outside, I would be taking “some” of my Dollfie Daughters out for a spin again!

It seems that Kotobukiya and Danny have been working closely to bring about more synergy between figurine manufacturer and us collectors through Danny’s newly launched figure.fm;  Kotobukiya loves the otaku room photos that were submitted to the 20090326 giveaway so much that they are planning to publish a book based on otaku room photos named – OTACOOL.  In response to Danny’s call to submit new photos, I once again took out my digital camera and started snapping photos of my command center!

It seems that somehow, my Dollfie daughters and Hikari photo studio managed to get on the cover!  Well, it’s not the finalized version it is quite cool already!

Anyway, I snapped a bunch of photos and hopefully some of them will get picked for the book!  To be honest here, I never was ready to take good photos during the giveaway since I was literally buried in junk before, I guess it really took 4 months to completely reorganize my room to a point where I can safely take photos of it without embarrassing myself in front of everyone.

As we are closing in to the end of June, I would like to spend a little time to reflect on all the pre-order activities that has been going on in the past month.  As some of you are already aware of my recent interest in Dollfie Dream, I have been cutting back drastically on pre-order figures and various expenses, however, I have managed to balance out my pre-order list with some cancellation of my original pre-order.  Let’s take a look at the addition list first!

The first one that got added to my pre-order list was no one than Saber Lily from E2046 Gathering series, I am quite a sucker when it comes to Saber Lily so when I found out she was ready to be preordered, I wasted little time to put her in my shopping cart!  Saber Lily T’s System version is slated to arrive in late August.

I am sure a lot of you have grown tired of my continuous Dollfie Dream and Otaku Project spam, how about a little change of pace and go back to the good old PVC figure review for a bit huh?  I have done a brief summary of this 1/5 FREEing Kenshin in the Dollfie Dream Completion Project Arrival post as I got her but that didn’t do her enough justice so I decided to do a more detail review for her.

One of the main reasons why I haven’t done much with PVC photo review is because of the wordpress 2.8 upgrade has broken one of my most favorite plug-in Wordpress Flickr Manager.  It takes cares of everything for me, but since it’s broken and the developer is no where in sight, I am not sure when this is going to get fixed >.>;  I wish I never upgraded to wordpress 2.8 despite of all the new features, having a working flickr manager is way more important to me….

Anyway, enough ranting, let’s get back to Kenshin!  Believe me when I say this is probably the best looking Uesugi Kenshin PVC figure we have to-date, she definitely deserve this title.  The previous attempts by Griffon and Kotobukiya could not even come close to the beauty of this Kenshin.

Finally finished up with Feena’s normal end summary, this will definitely make me think twice about covering a story as long as Feena’s normal arc next time, the game play alone was well over 15 hours for me, obviously it would take much longer than that to finish a summary, why didn’t I think of that ;s

Anyway, as we approach the end of April, more loots arrived yesterday and here we go with the inspection.  Another box was supposed to have arrived, but due to my extreme fatigue in writing Feena’s story, I was unable to hear the door bell, ala, I guess I will pick up Yami next week at the post office.

chuchu-2009-03-15-13-52-33-40

So I finally completed the Hiyori arc last night, it was good… better than I thought it would be (I played too many dark eroge, a light hearted love story is a good change of pace).  Now Chu x Chu is not a new game anymore, it was released back in 2007.  It didn’t catch my attention then, the only reason why I decided to play the game was because of the numerous reviews I came across on Hiyori Pixie figure by GSC.  The pose is graceful, the facial expression is charming and the costume or lack thereof, plus the ability to cast off.  I usually prefer figurine with long hair but she will do fine without it and make it up via other departments.

Hiyori Pixie

So my quest began to find out more details on Hiyori Pixie (because of my stubboness, I insist on finding out as much information as possible on every figurine I have).  I am tempted to talk about the whole game since I have pretty much understood 90% of the game but the fact that I only completed the Hiyori arc and have no intention to finish the whole game, may be I should just stick to the Hiyori’s arc.

Even with the economic downturn, almost everyone are scaling down their spending; including collector like myself.  However, there are  some figures that are so unique that one should assign priority to them over the run of the mill figures.  Let’s take a look at them:

First up, the leader of the pack, Fate Unlimited Code exclusive character Saber Lily 1/7 PVC ~Distant Avalon~ from Good Smile Company.  Do I need to say more?  Saber Lily actually debuted as a bonus figma with the Fate Unlimited Code Playstation 2 collector’s edition.  I knew it in my heart then there will be more figurines made with this costume, and I was right about it.  This version of Saber is arguably the best looking Saber figure between Fate stay night, Fate hollow ataraxia and Fate Unlimited Code.  There is something about this Saber figure that I know it will rank one of the best looking figures in 2009, and will certainly become one of the top five figures in my collection.

Next up is Nanoha Takamachi Swimsuit version also from GSC.  Now, let me be honest here,  I am a much bigger fan of Fate chan than Nanoha chan in the series.  However, knowing the GSC is already working on a paired Fate T. Hawlaown in all her swimsuit glory.  One cannot buy Fate without buying this Nanoha for the obligated symmetrical docking action!

nanohaswimsuit

Third place is the School swimsuit mecha nurse girl Nana Megami Magazine Vol.8 from Orchid Seed.  I have never been a huge fan of Orchid Seed figures, but this one caught my attention.  It’s a MS Girl!  MS Girls are hot, especially the ones drawn in 駒都えーじ’s personal website 「Passing Rim」. I secretly wish that every MS Girl drawn by 駒都えーじto be made into PVC figures!  I am sure Ryusei Date himself would be gunning for this one.

Fourth place is from a relatively small production company call Native, and they bring us a simply yet extremely sexy looking Kotone Ousaka, original illustration by the famous artist Tony.  There is apparently a story constructed behind this illustration.  This girl is actually a 22 years old 4th year university student studying to be a teacher!  In this particular illustration, she appears to be enjoying a midnight banana snack in front of her students, or is that a real banana?

Fifth place is Black Rock Shooter also from GSC (they are taking all the spots up ;x, and it’s not over yet!).  Now, I am not yet a big fan of Hatsune Miku or her variation character, the prototype pictures are stunning enough to convince me that this is a buy.  I will be most interested to see if her eyes are truly glowing.

Sixth place, also from GSC is the long awaited Adult Mikuru Asahina.  I am sure many of us have been waiting for a more mature looking Mikuru Asahina, and GSC is ready to deliver with a pose that we are all familiar with.

adultasahina

And finally, the last place, hanging on barely by a thread is from the Bible Black series, Limited release 2000 pieces Saeki Kaori & Takahiro Hiroko figure pair from Miyabiya.  I have never bought anything made by this company before, but I have always wanted to get a decent looking Saeki (I have always had the hot for Saeki), and with the last Saeki Kaori from C-Works Diva ended in utter disappointment, I am really looking forward to this one.

saekiandtakashiro

This conclude my immediate buy-list, at least for now.

Practice makes perfect right?  That’s what they always says.  Well, that’s exactly what I am going to do!  Thanks for the kind words from twu, I pulled myself together and did another photo session with Ryoko Bunny.  Why Ryoko Bunny again?  For comparision sakes of course!  The setup this time is slightly different, I free up more space in my crafting table and was able to position Ryoko a little further away from the light diffusion box.  The diffusion material this time is wax paper you use for microwave (no tracing paper) instead of the matt laxen film I was using last time.  The camera is still the same old Sony Cybershot DSC F707.  I have adjusted some settings in my camera also, the shooting mode is portrait.  And here is the result

Once again, any comments and suggestions are welcome

Revised lighting effect 01

Seems like the first photo shoot didn’t quite make it to the cut, but let’s try again, this time with dimmer lighting.

Hopefully, there will be more response this time!

What’s your opinion, too bright (unlikely), too dim? or Just right?  Before I started snapping away megabytes of pictures, it may be better to seek some opinion!
